LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER / THE £10 GUIDES

London beyond the obvious for £10 or less

You do not have to find a place nobody else knows to discover another side of London. A smaller museum, an unfamiliar interior or a story attached to an ordinary street can change the way an area feels. These choices give you something specific to notice. Some are well known locally; none needs to be called a secret to be worth visiting.

Try the free Petrie Museum for Egyptian archaeology, St Bartholomew the Great for a medieval interior, or the £10 Brunel Museum for engineering history in Rotherhithe. For a shorter discovery outdoors, start with three free Cobble scenes and choose one nearby story. Pick by subject and location, then check opening and access details.

Put a plan together

Build a discovery afternoon around one smaller institution and a short nearby walk. In the City, choose a subject—Roman life, medieval architecture or literary history—and resist adding every possible stop. Around UCL, check that the museum you want is actually open before setting out.

A few useful answers

Are these hidden gems?

Some are famous in their own fields. We prefer to explain why a place rewards a visit rather than claim it is unknown or undiscovered.

Will it be quiet?

We cannot promise low crowds. Smaller museums can have tight capacity, and even free venues can need a booking or a wait.
